Concept sketch for a contemporary new build house
Replacement dwelling in the open countryside
St Ann’s Well Café is situated on the eastern slopes of the Malvern Hills, above the Victorian Spa Town of Great Malvern. It is understood that St Ann's Well, housing the marble spout, dates back to 1813.
St Ann's Well is a Listed Building and lies within the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The building is now used as a vegetarian and vegan Café, providing a resting place for walkers. A function room is located above the Café.
The Café was in need of essential repairs and refurbishment.

Our Client bought a derelict bungalow on a large plot with woodland to the rear and set within the beautiful Worcestershire countryside. With the intention of building their dream home and moving from Somerset to be closer to their ever growing family, our client commissioned us to make their dreams a reality.
Requiring a house which would not only accommodate themselves and their beautiful collection of antiques, but also their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren we discussed their brief in detail to ensure that the home we designed not only met their needs today but their future needs also.
With the brief set Matthew Gullick Architects designed a stunning Georgian style Manor house and garage with carefully chosen bricks, stone quoins, window sills and lintels and sash windows the client was thrilled with the finished result.
The large entrance hall contains a handmade feature timber staircase and leads you to 3 large bedrooms and a master suite with en-suite bathroom and walk in wardrobes. On the ground floor the heart of the home is the large handmade kitchen with cooking range and breakfast bar which connects seamlessly to the dining area. The separate large homely living room is large enough for the frequent family gatherings yet still retains a cosy warm feeling. Off the kitchen is an oak framed sunroom positioned to make best use of the quite rear garden. With a study, WC and utility room our clients needs were met and their expectations exceeded.

Intended as a multi use studio space for a local painter and his wife, the brief called for an extension to the existing cottage situated within a Malvern Hills Conservation Area, infilling the rear yard and maintaining the magnificent views towards the Malvern Hills. The small yard was bound on three sides by neighbouring properties and access was only achievable over neighbours land or through the cottage.
The extension was created by utilising every inch of available space and encompassed the entire yard up to the boundary edge. Opening up the corner of the building and using large expanses of glazing to the roof and walls enabled the best use of light, creating a bright and airy room spectacular both day and night. The design incorporated a hidden rear door for future access to enable maintenance of the building and folding doors separated the main living room from the studio which enabled the rooms to become one large entertaining space.
The studio box was constructed using timber frame technology to provide as much space as possible within the building whilst ensuring the insulation requirements met with the building regulations. The box sat upon a concrete plinth was clad in Siberian Larch timber and utilised a long life flat roofing system to give a contemporary and maintenance free approach to the design.

In the process of extensive alterations to their house our client fell out of favour with the design and Contractor. With works at a standstill and the house in disarray the client came to Matthew Gullick Architects for assistance. The brief was to redesign the half built extension and alter the ground floor to better suit their taste and needs.
After consultation with our Client, Matthew Gullick Architects redesigned the extension using as much of what had been built as possible to save on costs but incorporating a contemporary approach to the design with large overhanging eaves, great expanses of floor to ceiling glazing to take in the wonderful views of ‘gods kitchen’ and incorporating doors which opened out onto a new patio area. Internally a new office was constructed from the existing integral garage and curved walls were constructed to flow through the house bringing you to the hub of the home, the new breakfast kitchen with integrated Aga.
The extension was rendered in an off white which sparkles in the sunlight and the contemporary flat roof incorporates lighting within the underside of the overhang to light the way in the dark. Bulkheads were formed internally at the perimeter to allow for the concealment of curtain rails. Crisp edges and timber cladding to the outside of the building turned this 1970s building into a stunning contemporary home.
